The high pacem Nottinghamshire left the field with injury after bowling their way through the second, but he returned after tea on Monday.
A team spokesman said general to return home soon to begin rehabilitation and recovery ahead of the ICC campaign in England in the World Cup in South Asia in February.
“Stuart has a torn abdominal muscle, and as such, do not take part in the Ashes tour of Australia today,” said team doctor Nick Peirce England in a statement.
“Given the nature of the injury Stuart has been ruled out for the upcoming ODI series (in January) against Australia.
“Stuart will return to England soon begin a rehabilitation program and expect to make a full recovery in time for the World Cup next year.”
General, 24, said he was devastated by his injury setback.
“Playing for England in an Ashes series in Australia has been something I’ve dreamed for a long time so having it cut short by an injury is devastating,” said Broad.
“So far the series has been everything I had anticipated and know that I will play no role is still very difficult to make.

“Given the way he had started the series was eager to play a leading role in England retaining the Ashes, but that is not to be.
“Injuries happen and there is nothing we can do about it not sure that is stuck in the rehabilitation and come back stronger in time for next year’s World Cup.
“This winter (north) is great for the England team, so my focus will shift to preparing for the World Cup.”
Chris Tremlett and Ajmal Shahzad are in line to replace general for the third test starting in Perth on 16 December.
